The last bookend

"You killed me...You b-bastard!" I could feel him trying to shout, but his strength was pouring out of him, and he could only whisper. I held him in my arms, and as I felt his life vanishing I knew that he hated me with every remaining fibre of his being.
Yes I was the instrument of his death. But then everyone dies eventually - the event is waiting for us all. So am I really just that? The simple instrument of an inevitable event?
But then what is that event? It is the most momentous event in his, or in any human's, life. It is the culmination of everything for him, the encapsulation. His death is the final bookend, and it enshrines his life forever from beginning to end. It is the final chapter, the final page, the final word, the final full stop. The book is complete.
I am the orchestration of that completion, I seal his life and mark it as finished. I am the most important thing in his life...so is he right to hate me? I have brought him to the utter climax of his being, and his life is complete because of me. He should love me! I have done more for him than anyone else in his life (save his mother, who is my opposite bookend). I have completed his life, the reason for his whole existence. I am his Destiny, and Destiny is fulfillment.
